Earrings for Akane
“My mum called and said to me, “This is the beginning of your years of bad luck. You better get something long to wear and watch out”…Have you heard that before?” Akane asked.
“No I haven’t.” I answered.
We had a good laugh about how superstitious Japanese mothers can be.
“But now that she’s said it, it kind of bothers me a little”, Akane said. “I wonder if you can make me something long to wear?”
“Like a necklace?”
“Yeah…but I’d rather have earrings.”
“Long earrings…something dangly? Or a long shape?”
We started sketching on serviettes and came up with a design we both liked. I wasn’t sure if they were long enough, but Akane’s mother approved. This is how Akane’s amuletic earrings were conceived, and made in her year of what we call ‘pre-bad-luck’.
